"For the pain, suffering and hurt of the Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.
To the mothers and fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry." |

In response to Parliament’s Apology, Tom Calma, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, stated that:
"By acknowledging and paying respect, Parliament has now laid the foundations for healing and for a reconciled Australia in which everyone belongs." In the Social Justice Report of 2008, he continued: "The National Apology was a ‘line in the sand that marks the beginning of a new relationship and era of respect’. We now need to build on this relationship and respect to move beyond the National Apology to healing." |
